How to Choose a Birthstone

The most common approach is simple: choose the stone for the month you (or the person you're gifting) were born. But birthstone jewelry is more flexible than that — and more personal. Here are a few ways people choose:

  • Your own birth month: The most traditional choice. Wear your stone as a daily reminder of who you are.
  • A loved one's birth month: A child, partner, parent, or best friend. Wearing someone else's stone is one of the most intimate gestures in jewelry.
  • Multiple stones together: Layer a mother's necklace with each child's stone, or stack a couple's birthstones side by side. Two or three stones on a 16"/18"/20" chain set is a classic.
  • What resonates with you: Drawn to garnet's deep red or aquamarine's calm blue? You don't need a birthday reason to wear a stone that speaks to you.
  • Gifting blind: If you're not sure of the recipient's preferences, 18" with an extender is the safest length, and a classic stone like amethyst, aquamarine, or citrine rarely misses.

February – Amethyst

A stone of peace, clarity, and spiritual insight, amethyst's name comes from the Greek for "not intoxicated." It's long been worn to clear the mind and calm the spirit — ideal for creatives, deep thinkers, and anyone seeking balance.

March – Aquamarine

Aquamarine evokes open seas and soft blue skies and is linked with calm, courage, and open communication. Ancient sailors believed it brought safe passage, and today it's loved for its soothing energy and clean, airy blue color.

April – Diamond (or CZ)

April's stones symbolize eternal love, strength, and clarity. Diamond is the hardest natural gem; high-quality cubic zirconia offers brilliant, budget-friendly sparkle for daily wear without sacrificing shine. Modern alternatives like Herkimer diamonds, clear quartz, and white sapphire offer the same meaningful symbolism with everyday wearability.

Style tip: One petite diamond (or CZ) pendant on a fine chain = effortless signature look. Care: Gentle cleaning keeps facets bright.

May – Emerald

Lush emerald channels love, renewal, and prosperity. One of the most storied stones in history — Cleopatra famously adored it — emerald's rich green comes from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium. Its natural inclusions, called a "jardin" (French for garden), are considered part of its charm rather than flaws. It's a stone that rewards people who appreciate depth and authenticity.

Style tip: Rose gold warms emerald's green beautifully for an everyday elegance that never tries too hard. Care: Mohs ~7.5–8, but emerald can be brittle — avoid ultrasonic cleaners and treat it tenderly.

June – Pearl / Moonstone

June is one of only a few months with two birthstones, and both are luminous in entirely different ways. Pearl — the only birthstone formed by a living creature — symbolizes purity, wisdom, and quiet strength. It's timeless in a way that transcends trends. Moonstone, with its ethereal adularescence (the soft glow that seems to move inside the stone), is linked to intuition, femininity, and new beginnings. It's a stone that resonates deeply with people going through transitions or new chapters.

Style tip: Layer a tiny freshwater pearl with a moonstone charm for a soft, dimensional stack that works from morning to evening. Care: Pearl is soft (Mohs ~2.5–4) — keep away from chemicals, perfume, and harsh surfaces. Moonstone (Mohs ~6–6.5) is more durable but still prefers gentle storage.

July – Ruby

Ruby is one of the most coveted gemstones in the world, and for good reason. Its vivid red comes from chromium — the same element that makes emerald green — and the finest rubies glow with an almost internal fire. Ruby radiates passion, vitality, and unshakeable confidence. Historically it was reserved for royalty, worn in battle armor, and believed to protect its wearer from harm. Today it's the fearless choice for people who lead with heart.

Style tip: A single ruby in a dainty bezel setting keeps it bold without overwhelming — let the color do the work. Care: Mohs ~9; one of the most durable gemstones you can wear daily. Still store away from other stones to avoid scratching softer pieces.

August – Peridot

Peridot is one of the few gemstones that comes in only one color — that distinctive fresh, yellowish green — and it's been beloved for over 3,500 years. Ancient Egyptians called it the "gem of the sun" and believed it held the power of nature itself. Unlike most stones, peridot actually forms deep in the Earth's mantle and is sometimes found in meteorites that have fallen to Earth. It's a stone that carries joy, good fortune, and a grounding connection to the natural world.

Style tip: Peridot's warm yellow-green looks especially beautiful against yellow or rose gold — the metals echo the stone's sunny glow. Care: Mohs ~6.5–7; clean with mild soapy water and avoid rough impact or harsh chemicals.

September – Sapphire

Sapphire stands for wisdom, truth, and loyalty. Deep blue hues pair maturity with quiet luxury — beautiful for everyday wear and beloved by royalty for centuries.

Style tip: Mix a tiny sapphire pendant with a diamond micro-chain for light-catching contrast. Care: Mohs ~9; sturdy yet store separately.

October – Opal / Tourmaline

October celebrates self-expression with two favorites. Opal — known for its magical play-of-color — embodies creativity, hope, and emotional depth. No two opals are alike; each one holds a completely unique pattern of light. Pink tourmaline radiates love, healing, and compassion, and its soft rose tones make it one of the most wearable and giftable stones of the year.

Style tip: Layer opal with soft pink tourmaline for a dreamy, textured stack that catches light at every angle. Care: Opal is sensitive to sudden temperature and humidity shifts — store thoughtfully and keep away from dry heat.

November – Citrine / Topaz

Golden November stones channel abundance, energy, and happiness. Citrine — with its warm amber and golden tones — is often called the "merchant's stone" and is a longtime favorite of entrepreneurs and optimists. Topaz brings clarity and resolve, and in its imperial orange-gold form, it rivals citrine for warmth and radiance.

Want a deeper dive into citrine's meaning, history, color symbolism, and styling? Read our full Citrine Birthstone Guide.

Style tip: Tiny citrine drops paired with a matching pendant make an easy, giftable set that feels warm and intentional year-round. Care: Gentle cleaning with mild soapy water keeps citrine's sparkle bright.

December – Turquoise / Blue Topaz

December's cool blues bring calm and clarity. Turquoise — one of the oldest gemstones in human history, worn by pharaohs and Native American artisans alike — supports balance, protection, and spiritual grounding. Blue topaz is crisper and more transparent, encouraging honest communication and mental clarity. Together they represent the full range of December's cool, contemplative energy.

Curious about December's stone? Read our full Turquoise Birthstone Guide for deeper meaning, styling, and gift ideas.

Style tip: Pair a petite turquoise bead with a longer blue-topaz charm for depth and color contrast that layers beautifully. Care: Turquoise is porous — avoid perfumes, oils, and prolonged water exposure. Blue topaz is harder but still avoid hard knocks.

Birthstones & Zodiac Signs

Birthstones are tied to calendar months, but many people also connect their stone to their zodiac sign — which doesn't always align perfectly with the month. If you're a Scorpio born in October, for example, you might feel more drawn to tourmaline's deep energy than opal's lightness. Both are valid, and both are yours to wear.

Here's a quick reference for how birthstones and zodiac signs overlap:

Zodiac Sign Dates Associated Stone(s)
Capricorn Dec 22 – Jan 19 Garnet, Turquoise
Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 Garnet, Amethyst
Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 Amethyst, Aquamarine
Aries Mar 21 – Apr 19 Aquamarine, Diamond
Taurus Apr 20 – May 20 Diamond, Emerald
Gemini May 21 – Jun 20 Emerald, Pearl
Cancer Jun 21 – Jul 22 Pearl, Ruby
Leo Jul 23 – Aug 22 Ruby, Peridot
Virgo Aug 23 – Sep 22 Peridot, Sapphire
Libra Sep 23 – Oct 22 Sapphire, Opal
Scorpio Oct 23 – Nov 21 Opal, Citrine
Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 21 Citrine, Turquoise

If you're drawn to a stone from a neighboring sign — or simply love a stone outside your birth month — wear it. Birthstone jewelry is ultimately about meaning, and meaning is personal.

How to Style & Layer Your Birthstone Jewelry

  • Single-stone simplicity: A tiny pendant with your birthstone — or a loved one's — adds meaning to any outfit without trying too hard.
  • Layer multiples: Combine 2–3 stones (e.g., partner + child) on 16"/18"/20" chains for a cascading family stack.
  • Mix metals, keep gems center stage: Gold-filled and sterling can play together beautifully — let the gemstones lead.
  • Gift ideas: Birthdays, new moms (multi-stone), bridesmaids, anniversaries, Mother's Day, or "just because." See our jewelry gifts for mom guide for birthstone gifting ideas she'll actually love.
  • Care basics: Remove before workouts, sauna, or pool. Store pieces separately. Clean gently based on each stone's hardness (Mohs scale).

Birthstone FAQ

Can I wear someone else's birthstone?

Absolutely. Many people wear a child's, partner's, or parent's birthstone as a daily reminder of that connection. There are no rules — wear what holds meaning for you.

What if I don't like my birthstone?

You're not obligated to wear it. Many people gravitate toward a stone from a neighboring month, a zodiac-associated stone, or simply one whose color and energy resonates. Birthstone traditions are a starting point, not a requirement.

Can I wear multiple birthstones at once?

Yes — and it's one of the most beautiful ways to wear birthstone jewelry. Layering two or three stones on different chain lengths (16", 18", 20") creates a personal, cascading stack. A mother's necklace with each child's stone is one of our most requested custom pieces.

What is the most popular birthstone?

Amethyst (February) and aquamarine (March) are consistently among the most popular, largely because their colors — soft purple and cool blue — are universally flattering and easy to wear. Citrine (November) is also a longtime favorite for its warm, golden tones.

Are birthstones the same as zodiac stones?

Not always. Birthstones are tied to calendar months; zodiac stones are tied to astrological signs, which straddle two months. Someone born on January 5th is a Capricorn (whose stone is garnet) — but so is someone born on December 28th. See the zodiac table above for the full breakdown.

Gold-filled vs. solid gold — what's the difference?

Gold-filled has a thick, bonded layer of real gold over a base metal core — it's durable, tarnish-resistant, and beautiful for everyday wear. Solid 14k gold is a premium, investment-level choice. Both are excellent options; the difference is mainly price and longevity under heavy daily wear.

Are the gemstones real?

Yes. Every stone we use at Lolabean is a genuine gemstone, chosen for color fidelity, durability, and natural beauty. We include care tips with every piece so your stone stays beautiful for years.

Can I design a custom multi-stone piece?

Yes — we love custom work. Combine two, three, or more birthstones into a single piece: a mother's necklace, a couple's pendant, a family charm. Contact us to start a custom request and we'll help you design something that tells your exact story.

Each birthstone tells a story. Whether you're layering your family's stones or gifting one meaningful gem, your Lolabean piece becomes a daily reminder of who you are and who you love.
