happy halloween

Halloween lights
Happy Halloween! My kids are super excited! We've already had a fashion show of Halloween costumes past. Luca is a ghostbuster this year and Julian will be half Ninja Turtle and half Thomas the Train. Halloween is a little different in NYC. We head to the Upper West Side for a block party of trick or treating, music and spooky decorated brownstones then we head over to friends for trick or treating in our building. The kids love it. They roam floor to floor, knocking on doors and collecting candy. If there's still time, we head to the streets and collect more candy from shops along 3rd Avenue. In the past, we've gone to the Museum of Natural History for a big Halloween party with trick or treating and live music and the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade.

local and seasonal

union square farmer's market
It was a busy day at The Union Square Farmer's Market. We go almost every Wednesday. It's such a great market and easy for us to get to. Our holiday market booth is actually situated right next to the farmer's market. We buy trout from Max's Hatchery, garlic from Keith's Farm and shishito peppers and Korean avocado squash from Lani's Farm. Speaking of Korean avocado squash, it's no longer in season which makes me want to cry. We slice it and bake with olive oil, sea salt and pepper. So good! It made me think of how people used to only eat seasonally and locally before our access to supermarkets and a global food market. I would love to try to eat locally and seasonally for one full year. I'll definitely do that one day but for now, I'm loving my daily avocado from California and Mexico. I found this local food wheel from the General Store and you can choose from four regions: San Francisco, Southern California, New York and the Upper Midwest. I also found this helpful guide on storing fresh produce.

Union Square Holiday Market begins November 20th and I really need a new shop counter. I have been using a collapsable table with grasscloth wallpaper wrapped around it. Needless to say, I need to step it up a bit. There are tons of cool counters around the web. I think the counter in the last image would be great. It could be open for now but also encased in glass one day if I were selling fine jewelry. I'm also leaning towards a horizontal light wood planked counter with a bright white top. It needs to be easy to build though because I really want to build it myself. I totally think I can do it.

Gosh, I am having the toughest time deciding on gift wrapping for the website. I have to buy in bulk so I need to really like it. I want the gift wrapping to be as special as the jewelry inside. There is just something about receiving a beautifully gift wrapped box. As you can see, I'm all over the place. The third image could be nice. Since I'm based in NY, I could use a snowy New York City scene for the holidays and change the vintage photo to fit each season. hmmm...

cozy nooks

I have a very small home in New York City but I made space for a cozy little reading nook. I created a built in window seat with a bunch of cozy pillows and a wall lamp. It's so nice to have a little spot to curl up, read and relax. I'm actually sitting here writing my blog now. My son Luca uses it all the time to sort through his beloved Pokemon cards. Seeing him there makes me so happy. Here are some nice little nooks found around the web.
